SALC training leads to industry jobs
Gareth Lewis is full of praise about his experience with the SA Learning Centre.
Gareth has worked in the disability environment for 15 years, with the past four years at Minda. He started out in his home country of Wales working for non-profit organisations such as the Opportunity Housing Trust which provides a similar range of support and accommodation services as Minda.
Gareth is a strong believer in the benefits of study. When he moved to Australia he embarked on a TAFE Certificate IV course to add to his UK qualification.
“Further down the track I took on the Diploma of Community Services through SALC as a way of challenging myself,” says Gareth.
The 14-month, one day per week CHC52015 Diploma of Community Services covers a broad range of relevant topics ranging from the development and implementation of service programs through to legal and ethical compliance matters.
“I really have to say that the study environment was great,” says Gareth.
“The course lecturers bring a real depth of knowledge to the course content, and have the ability to bring that knowledge to life for their students.
“The Diploma program includes a significant industry placement component, and for me this turned out to be a placement working with Minda.
“This was a terrific opportunity for me and led to employment within Minda, where I now present and facilitate programs for Minda support staff.
“I would encourage anyone interested in furthering their knowledge and skills in the disability field to take a look at what is offered at SALC.”
The South Australian Learning Centre is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO code 4881).
